Pink - Please Don't Leave Me

This video is for the song Please Don’t Leave me by female Rock artist Pink. The video was directed by Dave Meyers and released in January 2009 by her record label La Face, owned by The Sony Music Company. Pink herself, Alecia Moore, stars in it along side actor Eric Lively. This song, like most of the singles released by Pink is of a Rock/pop genre, and the quickly noticeable characteristics of the genre include the part narrative, part performance format.
The relationship between lyrics and visuals is one that occurs regularly and generally takes the shape of Pink acting out a scene that fits with the lyrics to emphasise the meaning behind the individual lines. As she sings the word ‘nasty’ she emphasises this by shoving the male character into his pillow. Another example of this is when she sings ‘The one that wins is the one that hits the hardest’ and promptly follows it up by breaking his leg with a golf club.
The relationship between the music and the visuals is a lot more subtle, but again noticeable when looking for it. A good example of this is the change of pace as the chorus begins. ‘Please Don’t leave Me’ tends to result in something occurring that results in the male characters inability to leave, e.g. the first time the line is sung he skids on the interestingly placed marbles and falls down the stairs spectacularly.
The pace of the video is fairly constant throughout, but the points at which it slows down do fit in with the parts of the song where Pink is singing slowly and the music matches this, for example, when she is limbering up to hit the man with the golf club she sings, ‘Baby I don’t mean it... I promise’ and the music slows down with it, this is reflected in the action of the video, which is minimal for a few seconds.
Star Image motifs are a part of Pinks act and this video includes several. One of the first things that springs to mind when thinking about Pink is her peroxide blonde hair and this is certainly a part of the video with many of her close ups coming from a slightly high angle to include the hair in the video wherever possible. There are several pictures of her in the house including a large one in the bedroom and this helps emphasise her image and its role in her music. Another characteristic of pop/rock music videos that this particular example uses is the multiple change of costume. Some of the costumes worn by Pink are quite revealing, and these, added to the nurse’s outfit do suggest there is an element of putting the artist on display.

Voyeurism plays a part in the video because of the above mentioned costume and certain outfits in particular are designed to show the artist as a sex symbol, and there is also use of intertextuality to highlight the importance of the artist within her products, In this case there is a shot that shows a large picture of her and her trademark hair in the first bedroom scene.
